True Family offers the viewer a rare and intimate portrait of Meschiya Lake by following her in a period in time when she was busking in the streets with different musicians putting together her own band – The Little Big Horns.
The first time I heard Meschiya Lake was back in 2008. She was busking in the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans and I was immediately blown away by her powerful voice and her amazing karishma.
The following year I made contact with her and went back to New Orleans with the goal of making a documentary about this extraordinary singer.
When meeting Meschiya I was also introduced to a crowd of young talented musicians and dancers who have picked up the traditional Jazz, now playing and dancing in the streets and clubs of New Orleans.
I set out to make a movie about this new movement in the music scene documenting it from the point of view of Meschiya Lake and the tale of her life journey. The result is my own unique view on Meschiya Lake and the New Orleans music scene in 2009 and 2010.
Since i finished shooting the documentary in 2010 Meschiya Lake and The Little Big Horns have achieved great success, now playing prestigious gigs and international festivals.
